Novel Process for the production of MEG

Date : 28-Nov-2022

Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is used for the production of polyester fibers, polyethylene terephthalate resins, antifreeze applications and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In this research, a novel plant is developed to produce MEG from Ethylene. The Ethylene-to-Ethylene Oxide (EO) plant is integrated with the EO to MEG plant to reduce utility costs and recover high-value products. Heat integration tools are utilized for energy saving opportunities. Furthermore, a multitube glycol reactor is used in conjunction with a novel MTO catalyst in the Ethylene to EO reactor. It is shown that the integrated EO/EG plant produces ethylene glycols with same purity and product recovery as of the conventional design. A comparative economic assessment based on a 200,000 t/y plant indicates that the use of process integration techniques has the potential to reduce costs significantly.
